Meet the Athlete: Katherine Sheridan
Name: Katherine Sheridan
Age: 25
Hometown: Vienna, Virginia
Current residence: Omaha, Nebraska
Occupation/Degree you are working towards: Process Engineer for Evonik (They sponsor a German soccer team called Borussia Dortmund aka BVB and also make specialty chemicals on the side)
High School: TJHSST (Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology) in Alexandria, Virginia. Don’t google it, there’s lots of terrible articles about discrimination and admissions.
College (major/minor): Chemical Engineering Undergraduate at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (aka Virginia Tech) in Blacksburg, Virginia
What is your running background? My parents met running and that was the beginning of the end. I ran with my dad starting when I was about 10 years old. I finally beat him in a 5k turkey trot road race right before high school. Joined the high school cross country team and did 3 seasons a year all the way through end of sophomore year of college.
Favorite distance to run? Right now, 10km or half marathon. In college, cross country 6k no contest.
What are your future running goals? Continue running, maybe a triathlon or another marathon? Good question
I can’t run without…? Motivation, like you’re about to miss your plane or you really want to eat a giant bowl of pasta. For a training run though…probably socks? Those sock shoes from Nike were awesome for sitting on the couch but not running
Do you do anything to stay injury free? Occasionally, I think about stretching. Sometimes, I dance with my pajamas on inside out and hope the snow gods have power over injuries too.
Do you have a favorite running book/podcast/movie/athlete? Spirit of the Marathon makes me cry every time don’t @ me
What is your favorite race you have competed in the past? Living History Farms, I’m a sucker for watching people run ridiculous courses in ridiculous clothing and also warm stew, that too
What is your number one bucket list race you would like to do in the future? Bay to Breakers 12km Saucony Seeded Centipede Division, anyone interested???? It’s 13 runners connected by bungee cord and the fast ones are surprisingly fast.
Do you have any advice to other runners? I’m not great at the advice. Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment? Some days, eat salad and go for a run. Other days, eat cupcakes and refuse to put on pants. Balance is good.
What are your PRs?
Not fast enough
3k steeple: 11:09
6k Cross: 21:52
10k road: 40:12
Half: 1:24:19
Marathon: 3:11:12
How long have you been an LRC-Nebraska member? 2.5 years
Joined Team Nebraska “by accident” when I moved to the Midwest in August 2016. I didn’t realize it was a whole deal until M2M October 2016 when people recognized the team and came up to me and asked how to join…
What excites you the most about being an LRC-Nebraska athlete? People who go on 18 mile progressive tempos with me at 7am on Saturday mornings…but seriously who does that?
What does a typical training week look like for you? Walk us through your daily routine (training related and otherwise): Saturday long runs, Tuesday track, everything else some other time.
Routine? Monday thru Friday work starts at 7am ish, but no one will report me missing as long as I’m there by 8:45. Summer morning runs at 5:15 am are dope. Scriptown run on Thursday is life, even if it’s just for the beer and not the run. Saturday urban run was where I first felt at home in Omaha.
We all approach training and racing differently, so tell us what your short-term and long-term goals are with running: Short term goal is to survive this 0 degree ice box winter with some of my fitness intact.
Long term goal is to remain healthy and maybe run another marathon.
Where are your 3 favorite places to do long runs at the moment?
Wabash
In increasingly tiny circles around downtown Omaha zeroing in on my coffee shop target
California
After a solid race or long run, what is your favorite meal to demolish and replenish those calories? Please use details and give recommendations! MAC AND CHEESE…I’m definitely in the “run to eat” camp, not “eat to run”
Share a crazy training or racing story, or simply an interesting moment in time: The fact that you’re still reading at this point means you think I’m mildly interesting…but my craziest racing story is from my freshman year of high school indoor track when I qualified for the state meet in the 1600m and 1000m with only the 500m race in between. Seems stupid now, but really got me hooked on a feeling. (Still high on believing)
What book are you currently reading or TV show are you binge watching? Currently binge (re)watching That ‘70s Show
Currently reading The Drunkard’s Walk…it’s actually about science before y’all jump to conclusions.
You’re the star of a running movie, and the opening scene is you running on a winding dirt road, with a beautiful sunrise. What song is playing in the background? Beautiful Drug
Or maybe Africa if you can Photoshop in a few giraffes and a Lion
