Brew 2 Shoe and Thunder Run

By Logan Watley (August 15, 2011)

We finally were able to find finishing results from the Brew 2 Shoe 10k run that took place Saturday August 6th.  The final results show five males and our one female hitting the minimum standard, while the two other guys just missed it.  The guys were led by Logan Watley at 8th place (34:58.2).  After Logan, the LRC team ran like they were back at NWU with Ryan Osberg (35:44.9), Neil Wolford (36:33.4), Eric Noel (36:52.2) and Mike Herz (37:15.5) all finished in succession (10th-13th).  Just over the minimum standard, Derek Sekora (37:52.0) and Drew Pope (38:28.7) finished 16th and 17th respectively. Amber Brandenburger (23rd overall) won the women’s race (and the “big-time prize”) with a time of 41:17.2.  All-in-all, it was pretty amazing to see eight LRC athletes finish in 6 minutes and 16 places. Watching the finish, it felt like every athlete finishing had an LRC jersey on.  After the awards, we enjoyed breakfast/lunch at a local establishment (Bob’s Diner) and reminded each other of the terrible hill at mile 5 (pretty much a mile climb).

Then, one week later, LRC had almost a more impressive showing at the Lincoln Thunder Run on August 13th.  The 5k races takes place on the aiport tarmac, and it could not be a more open/flat race.  The guys ran amazing, taking four out of the top five spots.  Logan Watley ran one of his better races of the summer and won in a time of 16:01.  The next three LRC finishers were not far behind, with Ryan Osberg (16:49), Eric Noel (17:10) and Mike Herz (17:17) finishing 3rd, 4th and 5th. In addition, Amber Brandenburger added another victory (and minimum standard) to her running resume by finishing 1st (13th overall) in a time of 19:00.  In addition, Austin McKillip won his age group, and Ryan, Eric and Mike swept the 20-24 age group. A great racing day for everyone!

This race marks the end of the summer racing circuit.  A few LRC members have plans to run some half or full marathons, while quite a few will run the NWU Alumni Run on September 10th, Market to Market Relay on October 1st and the Governor’s Cup on October 16th.  In addition, the women’s team has expanded by one as Adeline Kluth has accepted an offer to join.  Many of the guys on the team are hoping the women’s team can expand and develop relationships like our men’s team has!
